Energy Wise
– supporting our communities to reduce their electricity costs and be part of the Energy Transition.
Energy Wise is a project to support our local community to:
- Reduce its Energy Waste.
- Lower its Energy Bills.
- Increase its Energy Security.
- Become more Energy Self-sufficient.
- Transition to Low Carbon Heating Technology
- Shift to Clean, Renewable Energy.
- Reduce its Carbon Footprint.
How is Energy Wise Doing this?
- The annual Energy Wise Show.
- Running Community Energy Champion training, thereby creating a network of informed and helpful community members who can share that knowledge and help their neighbours.
- Providing education and information.
- Supporting the creation of Energy Local Clubs to share renewable energy.
- Referring people in need to the appropriate energy advice and support services.
- Running Future Energy Landscape workshops to educate local communities about the changing energy landscape.
The Energy Shift
The UK and the World are in the midst of a massive transition away from fossil fuel powered electricity generation to a new and very different way of generating, storing, using and conserving electricity and energy.
This website has been created to educate and enable us as citizens of the UK, to make that shift more easily.
The Previous Energy System
This relied on central and often distant power stations that were mostly fueled by coal, gas biofuel, nuclear and some hydro-electric power to provide electricity at great distances via the National Grid. The coal/gas/biofuel power stations often lost 60% of all energy created either through unused heat waste or the 10% that is lost by sending electricity long distance by pylon/cable. Large private energy companies buy and sell this energy to households and businesses with the aim of making the maximum profit for their shareholders as their bottom line.
The New Energy System
The present energy system is in a state of transition and transformation to one that is predominantly powered by renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro and tidal) that create energy for much closer, local markets and will include the options for many homeowners and communities to contibute to the local electricity grid too. This reduces energy losses and costs, as well as creates much cheaper, cleaner, more locally secure energy supplies where money can stay in the local economy and benefit the community to a much greater degree.
How we can all be part of this Energy Shift
To be an active part of this transition we need to do 2 things:
Reduce Our Energy Waste and Consumption
Shift To Renewable Energy Sources of Power
The UK’s National Context of the Energy Shift that we are making
The Net Zero Target
The UK Government is committed to our country becoming Net Zero by 2050. To do this there will need to be many changes in the energy system.
How Our Energy System is Transforming
The National Grid (formally Western Power) is transforming the way that it works here in SW England.
